People who are not familiar with water sports may think that sailboat terminology is a sort of exclusive jargon shared by anglers, fishers and water sport enthusiasts engaged on a regular basis with boating, canoeing and kayaking, but that is so complex to understand for those persons who takes sailing as a once in a while weekend getaway.

However anyone who is interested in learning more on sailboats can discover the secret meaning of those terms used in sailboat terminology, an amusing reading to get  the most of your already owned sail ship or just for playing to be he captain of the sailboat taking you for a break away from your every day activities.
 
  • Abeam is an orientation term meaning 90 degrees to either side of a sailboat.
  • Arhwartships is moving across the beam of a sailboat.
  • Astern in sailboat terminology means behind the sailboat.
  • Batten is a thin flexible strip holding the leach of a sail in shape.

  • Winch is a device attached to the deck of a sailboat that holds and increases tension on a wire or line.
  • Wing and Wing is sailing directly downwind with the jib on one side of the boat and the mainsail on the other side.
